6th Grade Social Studies

During this year, students will take a close look at past civilizations and peoples of the world, through the study of history, geography, politics, culture, and economic systems. In addition, students will take part in sixth grade social studies activities in reading and writing to develop their literacy skills even further.

7th Grade Social Studies

The 7th grade curriculum is focused to expand students’ understanding of our country’s current state by studying Early American history. Students will journey through the early Colonial period, the American Revolution, the Consitutional process and its authors, the impact of America’s expansion on indigenous peoples and slavery, finishing with the Civil War. Together we will focus on the political, economic, religious, and social events and issues related to the first 150 years of American history. We will closely examine American beliefs and principles including: limited government, checks and balances, federalism, separation of powers, and individual rights, reflected in the U.S. Constitution and other historical documents. Students are expected to express knowledge of American History through written and verbal expression, as well as to connect historical events over time.

8th Grade History

The 8th grade history curriculum is a continuation of the American History course taught in 7th grade. Students will begin their historical study with the Post Civil War Reconstruction Era, Industrial Age, Immigration, World War I, the 1920s and Great Depression, World War II, Cold War, Civil Rights and the Modern Era. Students in 8th grade Social Studies also work to develop historical thinking skills through the use of primary source document analysis and historical inquiry.  Students are expected to express knowledge of American History through written and verbal expression, as well as to connect historical events over time.

World History Grades 9-12

The world history curriculum emphasizes skills in historical thinking, a chronological approach to the human past, interactions among groups of people and social structures, and the identification of multiple perspectives on the past. Students’ historical journey will begin with prehistory and continue through current events, with an emphasis on reading, comprehending, and anylizing historical texts, primary sources, and artifacts as problem solving historians. Students are expected to express knowledge of World History through written and verbal expression, as well as to connect historical events over time.

About Me

I began teaching full time in 2003.  After 18 years in the same district, teaching multiple grade levels and subjects, I took up the challenge to teach Social Studies and Physical education at Lowpoint Washburn in 2021.  I share a home with my husband and our 2 dogs, Echo and Beans. I also teach group fitness classes (yoga and weight training) several times a week at my local gym.  When I’m not at school or at the gym, you can probably catch me at home reading, doing home improvement projects, watching reruns of Friends, The Office, or Big Bang Theory, a LOT of football, and my favorite off-grid youtubers.
